This year, the UK is set to see some exciting new cars on the road, as the electric vehicle (EV) market continues to expand. With more affordable and practical options than ever before, the transition to electric is becoming more accessible. The government's ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) policies and the pressure on the automotive industry to adopt electrification or face significant fines have played a key role in accelerating this shift. However, there has been a noticeable lack of interest from private car buyers in embracing EVs just yet.
Despite this, car manufacturers are stepping up to offer great value for money, with an expanding range of vehicles, including iconic models like Land Rover and the Porsche Boxster, now going electric. The industry is clearly committed to meeting the demand for sustainable and innovative transport options.
In this article, we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 cars to look out for this year, as the electric revolution continues to take hold.
Ford Ranger PHEV
Set to make waves in 2025, the Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is Europe’s first-ever PHEV pickup—a long-anticipated release with no direct rivals currently in sight.
For those looking to reduce emissions while maintaining towing capacity and commercial functionality, the Ranger PHEV promises to deliver. It offers a 27-mile electric range and can charge fully in just four hours, making it practical for both work and leisure.
Under the bonnet, it pairs a 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine with an 11.8 kWh battery and a single electric motor, producing an impressive 275 bhp and 690 Nm of torque. The advanced e-4WD system ensures optimal power distribution, supported by a smooth 10-speed automatic transmission.
As the UK’s best-selling pickup since 2016, the Ranger is expected to retain its crown, especially with no other PHEV options currently on the market. Deliveries are scheduled for spring 2025, making it one of the most exciting releases to watch out for in the coming year.
Porsche Boxster EV
After relaunching the Macan as an EV—an ambitious step given that the petrol Macan was Porsche's best-selling car —the brand is now turning its attention to another icon: the Boxster. Transforming this beloved sports car into a fully electric model marks a bold move in Porsche’s electrification strategy.
While the final production version of the electric Boxster remains under wraps, it’s expected to arrive in showrooms by 2025. Confirmed details include a mid-mounted battery, placed where the engine sits in the current petrol version, with options for both rear- and all-wheel drive. The EV is anticipated to deliver a range of up to 300 miles on a single charge.
The electric Boxster is just one part of Porsche's evolving lineup, with an all-electric Cayman expected to follow. As the brand redefines its icons for the EV era.
Cupra Raval
Following the success of the Cupra Born, which has already proven to be a great all-electric vehicle to drive, the Raval is expected to continue this trend in a smaller, more compact package. While the Born has already set a high bar, the Raval’s performance and practicality will be interesting to see as it looks to offer a more affordable, fun-to-drive alternative in the electric vehicle market.
With its impressive specs, including 226 PS, a 0-62 mph time of 6.9 seconds, and a range of up to 273 miles, the Raval aims to deliver the same exciting driving experience while being a more compact option for those looking for a smaller electric car.
It’ll be exciting to see how the Raval builds on the success of the Born and whether it can exceed expectations in this growing segment.
Polestar 5
The Polestar 5 is set to make a big impact when it comes to luxury electric cars, competing with established models like the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan.
Based on the precept concept car, which was unveiled back in 2020, the production model remains largely faithful to its original design and is expected to arrive in 2025.
This luxury car will feature a variety of sustainable materials, including knitted fabric made from recycled plastic bottles and seat upholstery underpinned by flax fibre composites. With an impressive 884 hp and an expected range of around 310 miles, the Polestar 5 is shaping up to deliver both performance and luxury.
Polestar has already made waves with the Polestar 3 SUV and the more affordable Polestar 4 coupe SUV, but the Polestar 5 is set to elevate the brand further. It’s also expected to feature new battery technology, developed in partnership with StoreDot, which promises the ability to add 100 miles of range in just five minutes using an innovative "pouch" battery design. However, it's unlikely that this technology will be available at launch.
ID.2
The Volkswagen ID.2 is set to become the brand’s entry-level electric vehicle, offering a more compact alternative to the ID.3. The ID.2 concept, which was previewed in 2023, is expected to make a significant impact in the affordable electric car market.
While many specifics are still under wraps, we do know the ID.2 will offer up to 226 PS of power and a range of around 280 miles on a single charge. With a starting price expected to be around £20,000, the ID.2 aims to make electric driving accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, Volkswagen has hinted at a GTI version of the ID.2, which is expected to launch in 2026.
Volkswagen first mentioned the idea of an affordable electric car back in 2019, and the ID.2 could finally be the vehicle that delivers on that promise. It will be interesting to see how it compares to the rest of the ID range and whether it can truly offer the accessibility and value Volkswagen has been aiming for.
Renault Twingo
Renault has introduced an all-new electric version of the Twingo as part of its EV range, with the concept first revealed in November 2023. It’s expected to be priced around £17,000.
The Twingo offers impressive efficiency, achieving up to 6.2 miles per kilowatt-hour. Over its lifetime, it’s projected to produce 75% fewer CO2 emissions compared to the average European combustion engine vehicle sold in 2023.
Although detailed technical specifications are still awaited, the Twingo is shaping up to be a practical and affordable choice in the electric vehicle market. Definitely a car to keep an eye on!
Jeep Recon
The all-new Jeep Recon is hitting UK roads in 2025 with an exciting addition to its electric lineup. Currently, Jeep’s only electric offering is the Avenger, which was released in 2023, but now the brand is introducing a robust 4x4 electric vehicle—the Jeep Recon. Similar in size to the Wrangler, the Recon stands out with features like removable doors, a retractable roof, Jeep's Selec-Terrain traction management system, tow hooks, off-road tires, and underbody protection.
While the Recon shares some similarities with the Wrangler, it’s not intended to replace it. The next-generation electric Wrangler is already slated for a 2027 debut and is expected to set new benchmarks for off-road performance.
The Recon is estimated to have a range of up to 373 miles on a single charge and deliver power of up to 600 PS, with rumours suggesting a hybrid version may also be in the works. It’s thrilling to see an all-electric off-road vehicle like the Recon entering the market, especially from a brand known for capable off-roaders.
With the success of the Avenger across Europe, Jeep is clearly expanding its electric range to meet growing demand. The Recon is poised to fill a significant gap in the market when it launches in 2025.
Range Rover Electric
The wait is finally over—2025 will mark the debut of the all-electric Range Rover, a milestone many have been anticipating for years. As a luxury SUV that has long been a top choice for discerning buyers, the electric Range Rover is expected to deliver cutting-edge technology and exceptional performance.
The vehicle is rumoured to feature an impressive battery system with an 800-volt architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging and offering a range of up to 400 miles. While detailed specifications are yet to be confirmed, these expectations already paint a promising picture.
Land Rover has reportedly developed a new four-wheel-drive system for this model, capable of independently adjusting the torque at each wheel in as little as one millisecond. This innovation promises a smoother, more luxurious driving experience, both on and off the road.
Aesthetically, the electric Range Rover is expected to look almost identical to its petrol counterpart—a decision likely to resonate well with fans of the classic design.
With its blend of luxury, advanced technology, and off-road capability, the Range Rover Electric is set to be a standout option in the premium electric SUV market.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Alfa Romeo is stepping up its game in the electric car market, replacing the petrol-powered Stelvio SUV with an all-electric version. This marks a significant shift for the brand, which will also transition the Giulia saloon to an electric model in 2025. Alfa Romeo is clearly embracing the electric future, while still maintaining its tradition of crafting beloved and dynamic vehicles.
Both the Stelvio and Giulia EVs will be built on Stellantis’ new STLA Large platform. This cutting-edge architecture promises a maximum driving range of up to 435 miles, supported by a high-performance 800-volt electric system. This technology allows the batteries to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes—an impressive feat that ensures convenience and efficiency.
For those concerned that the transition to electric might dampen Alfa Romeo's signature thrill and excitement, fear not. Both models are set to deliver a staggering 954 bhp, providing ample power and adrenaline to satisfy even the most performance-driven enthusiasts.
Alfa Romeo’s move to electrification shows its commitment to blending tradition with innovation, making the Stelvio EV a highly anticipated entry in the electric luxury SUV market.
Hyundai Ioniq 9
Hyundai is expanding its Ioniq range with the introduction of the Ioniq 9, a spacious and versatile electric SUV that offers up to seven seats. With a range of up to 385 miles on a single charge, it’s perfect for families and long-distance travel.
Inside, the Ioniq 9 features a sliding central console that extends from the front seats all the way to the second row. This innovative design incorporates charging ports and climate controls for rear-seat passengers, enhancing comfort and convenience.
The Ioniq 9 also boasts an impressive boot capacity of 620 litres, ensuring ample space for luggage, even with all seven seats in use. When the seats are folded down, the storage space becomes even more generous, making it ideal for those with active lifestyles or larger families.
With its combination of practicality, range, and innovative interior features, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 is set to be a strong contender in the growing market for electric SUVs.
