New Volkswagen Transporter unveiled – and it got lots more space
Volkswagen has just unveiled the new T7 Transporter, and it’s like the Transporter had a growth spurt.
This latest model not only stretches its legs with more space but also offers a variety of powertrains—from plug-in hybrid and fully electric to traditional diesel. With its increased size and higher payload capacity, the T7 Transporter is ready to tackle more tasks and carry more gear. It’s the same trusty van, now with extra room and options to fit almost any need.
At first glance, the new Volkswagen Transporter might resemble the Ford Transit Custom, but it has its own standout attributes. Known for its versatility as a panel van, the Transporter comes in two different body lengths and roof heights. The standard version measures 5,050 mm in length and boasts a wheelbase of 3,100 mm—an increase of 146 mm and 97 mm, respectively, over its predecessor. Despite these upgrades, the standard roof height remains under two meters, allowing drivers to easily navigate multi-storey car parks without a hitch.
Volkswagen has increased the maximum width between the internal wheel housings by 148 mm to 1,392 mm. The standard wheelbase Transporter now offers a maximum load length of 2,602 mm.
In terms of cargo space, the basic Transporter provides 5.8 cubic meters. If you need even more room, the extended wheelbase and high roof versions can accommodate up to nine cubic meters of cargo and feature a maximum load length of 3,002 mm.
Additionally, the new Transporter supports a maximum payload of 1,330 kg and a towing capacity of 2.8 tonnes, both of which have been enhanced over the previous model.
The new Volkswagen Transporter offers a range of diesel options, all featuring 2.0-litre turbo engines. These engines deliver 109 bhp, 148 bhp, and 168 bhp to the front wheels. Notably, the 148 bhp and 168 bhp diesel variants can also be equipped with four-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard on the highest-spec model.
For those interested in a plug-in hybrid, the Transporter features a 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with a single electric motor and a 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup produces 229 bhp and drives the front wheels. As of now, specific details about the electric-only range for the PHEV version are not available.
The electric powertrain options include a single rear-mounted motor with outputs of 134 bhp, 215 bhp, and 282 bhp. All electric models are equipped with a 64 kWh battery. While the exact range for the Transporter hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s worth noting that the Ford Transit with a similar 64 kWh battery offers a range of approximately 209 miles, which may provide a rough indication of what to expect from the Transporter.
The Volkswagen Transporter is available in multiple configurations to suit various needs. You can choose between the traditional panel van, which comes with either three or five seats, or opt for the double-cab version, which provides seating for six. For those needing more passenger capacity, there’s also a nine-seat minibus option. Whether you need a versatile work van or a spacious people carrier, the Transporter offers flexibility to accommodate different requirements.
Inside the new Transporter, the cabin features a 12-inch digital instrument panel and a 13-inch infotainment touchscreen prominently positioned at the center. The system includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless connectivity. Keyless start adds convenience to the driving experience.
The Transporter is also equipped with a range of advanced safety features, including lane-keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, and automatic emergency braking, enhancing both driver and passenger safety.
The new Volkswagen Transporter will be available to order in the coming weeks, with the van expected to hit UK streets in early 2025. While Volkswagen has yet to announce specific UK specifications or pricing, it is anticipated that the starting price will be around £35,000.
