Did you realise you can make money off your EV charger?
You may not be aware, but you are able to make money off your EV charger by in essence renting out your charger to people who may not have access to one. As the host you will be paid for the amount of energy used to charge the vehicle and the person who will be using will save money on their end in comparison to using a public EV charger. As the host you also have the ability to control how much you charge the payee, meaning it’s possible to generate a lot of money through doing this.
The cost of getting an EV charger installed at your home is not cheap, so this is one way in which it can pay for itself. There are variety of different EV charging apps on the market each will give a price recommendation on what to charge per kWh, but as the host you are able to set whatever price you feel is appropriate from the price per kWh and generate some profit. However, make sure that whatever you are charging per kWh is covering the cost of electricity being used, as we know that electricity tariff can vary.
When a payee is looking at using your EV charger most apps will ask for an image of the dashboard to see what the charge of the vehicle is and then will calculate the cost and time it will take to charge the car. Along with this the host is able accept or decline any request to use their EV charger.
It is key to check that the charger’s manufacturer allows for charge point share as it could invalidate the warranty. There are many different EV charging point sharing apps out there in the UK but do your research and find the one that works the best for you.
