The UK has recently celebrated a significant milestone, surpassing one million electric car sales. This achievement marks a pivotal moment in our transition away from traditional combustion engines, signalling a shift towards a more sustainable future. In recent years, the popularity of electric cars has surged, with an increasing number seen on our roads every day.
Government initiatives have played a crucial role in driving this transition, offering incentives such as reduced tax rates to make electric cars more financially appealing. Concerns persist regarding the high upfront cost of electric vehicles, but leasing options have become increasingly popular for those who want to drive electric without the commitment of outright ownership. It's worth noting that government schemes currently benefit businesses more than individuals, with grants for individuals having been removed in 2022.
Additionally, substantial investments have been made in electric public charging infrastructure, making it more accessible to those who may not have the option for a home charger or are hesitant to invest in one. Since last January 2023 to January 2024, we gave seen a 46% increase in the amount of charging devices in the UK showing the forward path the UK is taking to create a more efficient charging infrastructure.
The reduced running costs of electric vehicles, with an average charge costing around £17, have further incentivised consumers to make the switch. Coupled with a growing desire to reduce emissions and do our part for the environment, electric cars have become an attractive option for many.
However, despite these advancements, we still have a long way to go before achieving a fully electric vehicle fleet. With the UK government planning to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, there is mounting pressure on manufacturers to transition to electric vehicles. Some manufactures do feel as though they do not have enough time to meet government guidelines and regulations.
As we continue to prioritise sustainability and decarbonisation, electric cars are expected to gain even more momentum, leading to a cleaner and greener future for transportation.
