BT Group has announced an exciting technical trial, paving the way for a groundbreaking innovation. This involves repurposing green street cabinets into convenient kerbside EV charging points, and the entire initiative is being managed by BT's digital startup company, "Etc." The inaugural charging point, a 7.4kW charger located in Scotland, is set to go live by the end of the month. This innovative approach addresses the challenge of limited availability for off-street parking charging solutions.
The Scotland-based charger, equipped with two connectors, will initially serve Openreach EV drivers and BT Group personnel before being made accessible to the wider public. The forward-thinking plan involves retrofitting unreplaced green street cabinets with a single charge point, each featuring two sockets, just before decommissioning. A notable aspect of this charging solution is the incorporation of a device that harnesses energy from renewable sources.
This sustainable energy powers the charge point while seamlessly coexisting with the existing broadband service, eliminating the need for additional power connections.
BT envisions approximately 600 EV charging points to be rolled out over the next 18 months through their startup, Etc.
During this period, Etc. intends to thoroughly consider various aspects to ensure optimal functionality and accessibility of these new EV charging points. Leveraging up to 60,000 street cabinets, BT aims to address the current shortage of EV charging points in the UK, demonstrating a commitment to supporting the government's plans for the widespread installation of EV charging infrastructure.
This proactive move by BT not only showcases their dedication to innovation but also aligns with their broader commitment to advancing the adoption of electric vehicles and bolstering the government's sustainable transportation initiatives.
